What is my BMI and obesity class?

A body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher is considered overweight. If someone has a BMI of 30 or higher, obesity is present. If a BMI is higher than 30, this is class 1 obesity; class 2 obesity starts at a BMI of 35. A BMI of 40 is also known as obesity permagna (class 3 obesity). Therapy should also be considered for patients carrying less excess weight if they also suffer from diabetes, because this can cause numerous secondary diseases.

Mannheim University Hospital’s body mass index (BMI) calculator

You can use Mannheim University Hospital’s body mass index calculator to perform an initial self-assessment. Of course, BMI is only one of many criteria used to assess the risks to your health. The specialists at Mannheim University Hospital ask their patients about and measure many other individual parameters (including the likes of sugar levels, fat distribution in the body and physical activity).

Calculating BMI

This is how the body mass index is calculated:

The BMI (body mass index) is a measure used to evaluate a person’s body weight in relation to their height. But it is only a rough guide, since it does not take into account a person’s build or individual fat / muscle body mass composition.
